Yakima County Fire District 5 maintains a team of personel to operate heavy equipment on emergencies. The district owns two Caterpillar dozers and two lowboy trucks that team members operate. The team is a very effective tool for extinguishing large wildland fires given the ability of this equipment to access remote terrain as well as put in large amounts of fire breaks.

The team is stationed out of the district’s headquarters fire station in Zillah. The team also trains extensively and this begins annually on the first weekend in June.

Dozer Team Application

Dozer 1 is a 2017 Caterpillar D6N. This unit is equipped with a 6-way blade, enclosed cab with forestry protection, and a winch off the rear. This unit was purchased new in by the fire district in 2017.

Dozer 2 is a 2002 Caterpillar 527. This unit is equipped with a 6-way blade, enclosed cab with forestry protection, and a grapple off the rear. Before being acquired by the fire district in 2009, Dozer 2 was used as skidder, carrying logs for a local forestry company.
